Usually, coke has the following chemical composition: 82 – 88% solid (non-volatile) carbon, 10 – 12% ash, 0.5 – 1.0% sulfur. The chemical composition of coke depends on the nature of coal.

Coke has sufficient porosity (up to 50%) and good combustibility. The heat of combustion is 27.2 – 31.4 MJ / kg.

The main areas of application of coke include:

iron smelting (furnace coke) – as a high-quality smokeless fuel, iron ore reducer, filler of charge materials.
Blast furnace coke should have the size of pieces of at least 25-40 mm with a limited content of pieces of less than 25 mm (no more than 3%) and no more than 80 mm. Such sizes of the pieces are connected with the fact that the blast furnace is a mine-type furnace in which there is a counterflow of outgoing gases and charge materials. If the pieces of coke are less than necessary, they will be taken out of the furnace together with the outgoing gases into the foundry industry (foundry coke) – as cuprous fuel
Foundry coke is larger than blast furnace coke by the size of the pieces; the most suitable product, in which there are pieces smaller than 60-80 mm. The main difference between foundry coke and blast furnace coke is the low content of S, which should exceed 1% (up to 2% in blast furnace coke). chemical and ferroalloy industry (special types of coke)
In the ferroalloy industry, fine coke is used (for example, a fraction of 10-25 mm), and unlike blast furnace and foundry industries, they prefer to use a product with high reactivity. For household purposes (household coke).

Household coke is used to meet household needs, including heating. Strength requirements for domestic coke are less stringent than for blast furnace and foundry coke.

In all the above productions, the best raw material is the strongest low-ash and low-sulfur coke, which contains a small amount of small fractions.
